Anthony Rose: 'Aldi's thrift-focused approach saw additional wine sales of £88.2 million'

I recently visited Aldi's Midlands HQ to find out more about the retail giant's story from its head wine honcho, Mike James, a thoughtful Doctor of Philosophy who topped Off Licence News's Top 100 list of the UK's most influential wine people. First we called into the Atherstone branch to check out Aldi's core wine range, which runs to 75 different varieties. The no-frills-no-false-promotions message was reinforced by the paucity of staff, the rudimentary shelving and lack of fancy packaging – just decent, reliable wines.
